Wednesday Write-Up: One Week Until Christmas

It feels weird to be thinking of Christmas already. I simply cannot wrap my head around the fact that it is exactly ONE WEEK FROM TODAY! I have never spent Christmas in a tropical wonderland instead of the winter kind. It’s a real trip (why yes, that was an intentional pun).

We want Zoë to still know that it is the holiday season and to celebrate Jesus’ birthday as a family. Z is really interested in birthdays lately, often telling us that it was daddy’s birthday, then the Kings (of Thailand), and now hers. I made the mistake of telling her that her birthday was next after we celebrate Jesus’. Now she thinks her birthday is tomorrow everyday instead of actually in June. Oops, bad mommy moment, I guess I probably should have figured a 2 1/2 year old would not comprehend how far in the future that is.

Anyway, we bought a lovely fake Christmas tree a couple of weeks ago. We decorated it with lights (that stopped working after about a week, can’t complain though, only paid 30 baht for them) and ornaments and candy canes. We also made Z an advent box filled with 25 different trinkets or candy since we couldn’t find an advent calendar (the kind with chocolate that I could steal from share with her). Every morning after breakfast we all gather so that Zoë can cover her eyes and pull something out of the “red box.” She loves it and it has helped us to show her that we are counting down the days until Christmas. I even went as far as to play Christmas carols in the house today, which felt so odd because it was sunny and around 30 C (85 F). We are doing our best to make Christmas in Thailand special.

I am thankful that we are in a country that doesn’t really celebrate Christmas in the traditional sense. If I were to be somewhere that I would have to bundle up to go outdoors, see all the decorated homes and trees, and was to hear of everyone around me going to visit their families for the holiday, I think that I would be having a much more difficult time being away from our family right now. So I am thankful that we are here in Thailand and celebrating Christmas IN ONE WEEK!

Sorry, I just can’t get over it… I need to go get some shopping done now!

I will still be writing my Monday, Wednesday, and Friday posts as usual this week, so subscribe and check back! Thanks for reading!
